Flea Market Love

Long before I was old enough to drive I used to go on my bike to Camberwell Market. I would get there early as the sun was coming up. I wasn't ever looking for the same stuff as the 'dealers'. But the funny thing is I usually found what I was looking for.

Last time I was there I wanted a 'head' to put the hats on at work.

I was also on the hunt for a few vintage sewing baskets. Bingo... got 1 head & 2 baskets!

I do love a market - especially what they call a 'flea market'

imagine walking along the streets of Paris for a little treasure (not sure if I'd find any bargains with my French!)

Or popping over to the USA for a bit of hunt for that perfect little piece.

Might just have to stick with Camberwell at the moment.

It is all pretty amazing.

The other day I was looking through old patterns, trying to work out if the volume / weight of yarn in a ball of Patons Totem yarn was the same in the 1940's as it is now.

Anyway thanks to Google I ended up looking at The Argus newspaper from June 1945.

I had to show you a few little adds from the paper I found in my travels.

Zoe noted the other day that the way traffic works in Cambodia is that the bigger your vehicle the more right of way you have. The exception to this rule are the cows.

They rule the road.

This one was just cruising along the road as we made our way to the bus stop for the long trip back to Phnom Penh.

It was a long trip back - so I took a few pictures along the way

We went and had some pre dinner drinks (diet coke!) on the rooftop of The Quay hotel.

It could be if:

* there was some sort of capital infrastructure - like proper roads, sewage, regular electricity supply.

* there wasn't so many unsavoury middle aged western men with less than good intentions.

* there was more places to educated children, then employ them once they became adults - for a proper wage.

The beaches look ideal. At sunset local kids get to play on the huge floating things in the water.

We wouldn't see these back home - the public liability would be too high! Instead come to a 3rd world county with no health care and take your chances!The huts along the beach behind Zoe are all individual bars with bad 90's music blasting from the speakers, with menus of fried food & booze. Once you sit down you will be inundated by ladies trying to sell you a massage, manicure, pedicure, leg wax, or fruit. If not it will be the kids trying to sell you friendship bracelets they made for you. If you tell them your name they will whip you up a personalised one before you can blink. Then tell you that you have to buy it.

Don't - it's keeping them on the beach and out of school.

The sunsets are lovely thought!

This is Anita. She has grown since she first was given her blanket, but she still uses it for sleep time! The cotton is warm but cool - because she sleeps with a fan next to her bed.

I have recovered from my upset stomach and spent the day in 5 star luxury instead of the squalor and filth that is everywhere in this sea side town.

Zoe and I paid for the privilege of an afternoon at Sohka Resort today.

If you look closely at the photo below there is a tiny dot on the roof near the palm trees to the right.

This was a guy who was painting the roof. He was there most of the time we were there.

I think he has a harness - but what was it attached to?

Of course I was still hard at work while Zoe swam - finding new suppliers for the shop!

Later in the afternoon the 'crew' all when down to the beach for a play

A long bus trip...

Yesterday we went from Phnom Penh to Sihanouk Ville on the Mekong Express Bus.

We got the last 2 tickets - back row. It was never going to be a good trip. After a 5+ hour tip we arrived in Sihanouk Ville and got a tuk tuk to our hotel. They moved the bus stop to the other end of town....so we got there eventually.

We then meet up with Peter - who had arrived a few hours before us after a hair-raising taxi for the 4 - 5 hour trip ($40)

Z & I were both pretty stuffed. Went and had a quick bit to eat....

We have been throwing up ever since! Would like any advise at this point on Cambodian Belly!

I just ate my first bit of food for 24 hours - cornflakes & milk that I purchased at the Orange Mart down town.

It's not just for kids.

It's about learning to copy with life and all that is throws at you.

It looks at war time embridery and textiles from WWI.
Called Threads of Connection
it has been put on my the Embroberers Guild of Victoria.

Looks interesting.....hope to get an have a look at it before May.

As I have 2 boys I spend a lot of holiday time hanging around skate parks.

This is Jack....my more than slightly mad son. He loves the beach....rolling in the sand like he is a lamington getting covered in coconut. He has seaweed on his head! I thought it was a wig until he got close up to me and I could see what is actually was!

The weather has been great, as has the company.

It's weird being on the 'other side' of the bay....good weird. Lots more beaches and places to go.

still havn't got my self organised, or a job......but thinking about it....

Time for a renovation

Is this the year I get my S___ together??
I have so much STUFF......despite trying pretty hard this year to cull a lot of it. But I keep getting more.
Do I really need the 2 muffin trays that make 12 muffins each that mum palmed off to me the other day.
Nor to I need any more jigsaw puzzles.
Jack has only just done the one he got for his birthday in June. And the 1000 piece one he got for Christmas will take a while.
I have to be more brutal.....get rid of more stuff.
I am planning on extending my house this year....so a lot of 'stuff' will need to go into storage anyway. I'm collecting boxes.............to put all the 'stuff' into. Maybe I should be chucking more.
The problem is I have too many hobbies. Crochet, Knitting (though not lately), Drawing, Painting, Sewing, Embroidering......they are the ones I can think of right now.

I would like to try and use my blog this year to share my skills with you........not sure if I have many to share though.
I can do crochet.......

Anyway for me.................2010 means

Last night the kids and I went to Williamstown beach to try and get out of the repressive Melbourne heat.
It didn't really happen.
It was still about 38 at 8pm.
We then headed off to The Strand to watch the fireworks. This was our view at about 8.40pm. The Blue moon is just rising above the skyline, and the ominous grey rain clouds are getting ready to burst open.
This happened about 15 minutes later.....when people where running out of the rain.
We did get to see a few fireworks.
But the kids enjoyed the flares and car honking by all of the 'revellers' more.

Anyway have a happy and crafty year.

Today while popping up posters for market3031 I stumbled across the Kris Kringle Night Market at the Northcote Town Hall.
I bought this little hair clip. Why you ask? Well I like to see what other people are creating, as well as to buy other peoples stuff.
This little clip was make by Cherry Stew. She also makes some gorgeous little outfits - but I have no little people to give these to at the moment.

Also in my travels this afternoon I stumbled across Local Shop. The place had a wonderful feel about it...and the smell was beautiful. It is a flower shop at the front and some fantastic products by some very cleaver locals at the back. They now stock Rabbit & the Duck stuff - who has some great photos of the Local Shop in her blog.
They are so new they don't seem to have a website.

Should I get a job???

I quit my job on Friday. I returned from Asia and had this overwhelming feeling I didn't want to go back there any more. For the past 6 years I have been in the 'health promotion' business - encouraging kids to walk to school.

If you know me you know I usually say it as I see it. I told my boss - my heart's not in it any more. Someone else can put thier passion into it. Not sure when I will actually finish - as I am busy at the moment doing my Cert IV in Tranining and Assessment (which work payed for!). and getting more things ready for Yarraville market and Market3031.

I know what I would like to do - but is there a demand for it.

I WOULD LIKE TO TEACH CROCHET.

I have never asked for feedback before but I am now.

Is there anyone out there (in Melbourne) who would be interested in learning the ins & outs of how to crochet???
I'm not asking you to sign up or anything - I just want to know if there is a need.

Today is my brother Peters 40th Birthday!
Dad was visiting him in Cambodia when he died - a year ago today.

I lot has happened since then.
Today I found out our old beach house has been demolished.
That makes me feel pretty sad. It had so much character.
But the 'cashed up boggans' who now have it will build some horrendous McMansion to get better views of the ocean.

1200......That's how many photos I took while I was away. Most of them aren't that great. Just a reminder of my travels. I am in the process of unloading them onto flickr. You can look at them here, if your got a couple of hours!

It is a bit scary getting back to real life. 166 emails & 25 phone messages to sort through (and I have not even been to work yet)

I have come to realise that home is pretty important....more particular the people around me. I was quite homesick towards the end of my trip.

I managed to pack a fair bit into my 18 days. There were some highlights though.

Catching up with Meg (and Amelia) in Bangkok.

She brought along her beautiful Babbette blanket that she has been making for Jules!

It is inspiring stuff.....well done.

The place I'd like to go back to...

Luang Prabang.

It was tranquil, calm, clean, friendly.

This is the beautiful Anita (with her new blanket) She is a very happy baby who spends lots of time swinging in her hammock.

You may think this looks like 'Starbucks'.....same same....but different. This is 'The Terrace'. It has half decent coffee - and wireless Internet. It's only taken me 6 days to discover this!
Nothing happens fast around here.

Yesterday we went to the Central Market. Anie, Ma, Par, Pundit, Mickey and myself.
It was hot, Mickey cried 80% of the time and Anie is a major bargain hunter. She will not buy anything for more 55% off the original price (which to me was pretty cheap to start with)

We stopped for a bit to eat - couldn't tell you what it was. Looked like jellyfish with worms sitting in coconut milk then topped with shaved ice. Yum! I declined this little treat, buy everyone else got stuck in!

On the way out there was a quick snack stop. They look like cockroaches to me - who knows. You do have to take the legs off because they have little barbs on them.
Again everyone (but me) got stuck in to theses little treats.
